Club Purpose

Oswego State Judo invites all interested people to join our club. There are no age limits, and men and women are all welcome. You do not need any prior martial art or athletic experience. You don't even need a uniform to start, just come in gym clothes. We meet on Mondays at 4:15 pm and Fridays at 6:45 on the 3rd floor of Lee Hall.

The goals of Oswego State Judo:
  • Improve fitness and well being.
  • Develop self-defense skills.
  • Provide opportunities for competition.
  • Spread the art of Judo.


Instructors

Judo:
  • Joe DiFiore (Sempai) is just a guy doing Budo.
  • 5'6'', 165 lbs. 29 years old.
  • 8 years of experience in martial arts, primarily studying Judo.
  • Member of the Bushido Kai Judo Club.
  • Judo Rank: Sankyu (Brown belt)

    • Brad Gibson (Taisho). Co-newaza instructor.
    • 5'9'' 178 lbs. 25 years old.
    • 4 years of experience in martial arts, primarily studying Judo and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Submission Grappling:
  • Guest instructor Andrei Vieru.
  • Over 10 years of experience in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, submission grappling, striking, and MMA.
  • Winner of the FCF Guess Who Contest.

Club History

The Oswego state Judo club has been in existence for over 10 years. The club has gone through some name changes during those years, but has maintaned its core presence.

Fall 1995- The American Jiu-jitsu club was in existence.
Spring 1996- Brazilian Jiu-jitsu club was started by Lawrence Allen. Lawrence was a training partner of Jordan Damon, an MMA fighter and BJJ player from Syracuse, NY.
Spring 1997- Lawrence left school, so Andrei Vieru took over the club. Shawn Sawyer was also involved with this group.
Fall 1998- Dave Denis joined the club and added a lot of BJJ experience and technique.
Fall 1999- Andrei Vieru instructed submission grappling, Shawn Sawyer eventually split off and instructed Japanese Jujutsu.
Fall 2002- Joe DiFiore joined Shawn Sawyer's jujutsu club and added Judo training until Spring 2004.
Fall 2004- Shawn Sawyer left school. Andrei Vieru continued instructing submission grappling and MMA. Brad Gibson keeps the club alive with SA.
Fall 2006- Joe Difiore returns to school and starts Judo instruction.



Class Description

A typical Judo class goes as follows:

  • 15 mins of warm-ups and stretching.
  • 30 mins of drills.
  • 30 mins of nagewaza (throwing) technique.
  • 30 mins of newaza (groundwork) technique.
  • 20 mins of randori (sparring).
  • 15 mins of optional open mat.
